Good Rejection?
Well, I have to say I've gotten the best rejection of my life. I should have been upset, but I couldn't stop smiling.
The editor, an executive editor at a very big publisher, said my medieval had "a breezy lightness which I don't often see in medievals, and that is definitely appealing". However, the editor said I needed to push myself more to push my work into the "cut above" category.
What had me crying out "why!!!???" was when she said my mss would certainly work in the "midlist level", but she was passing on it. Everyone has to start somewhere, right? I'd start midlist. :D
She went on to say she wanted to see more of my work. It just so happened that another editor at that house had requested one of my medieval/paranormals. When my agent called to let the executive editor know this, she said she would go to the other editor and discuss who would read it.
Now, I'm waiting. Again. Hell, who am I kidding? I've been waiting to hear from editors since March. :) The good thing is that the ones that have passed on one project have asked to see another.
Staying grounded and not getting my hopes up is my biggest challenge right now. I expect to hear a "no" from every editor that has one of my mss, so that if they do, I'm not so hurt. However, if I get another response, its all the better.
People call that pessimistic. I call it realistic.

I'd love to start at mid level too. Sounds good to me.
Sorry to hear about your rejection but it does sound like you are right on the cusp of selling.
Thanks, Nikki and romancewriter.
WOW!!! That's the BEST rejection I've heard in a long time. You are soooooo close!
Dang! I'd take that kind of rejection! Congrats :)
I sure hope I am, Jolie. :)
I know what you mean, Brenda. There wasn't much of a sting in that rejection at all. :D
I hope all my rejection letters have such a positive ring to them! Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thank you, Kelly. I can use all the finger crossing I can get. :)
