Question of the Week
One of my favorite things to do is go to a bookstore. I love seeing all those books lined up waiting for a reader to delve into the pages.
As most readers do, I have my favorite authors. The ones that as soon as I know they have a new book, I run out and get it. Yet, there are times when I look for something new. When I look for a new author, the first thing I do is try to find a cover amid all those books that grabs my attention.
I know industry professionals would like to say covers don't make a difference, but I beg to differ. Covers make a big difference.
So, I find a cover that grabs me. I pull the book out and look at the title and author to see if its someone I know, then I turn it over to read the back. If the back sounds interesting, I open up the book and read the first page.
This is how I've found so many new authors. Yet, I know I'm missing out on some great books by skimming over covers that don't interest me. As a writer, that makes me cringe. As a reader, I know that it happens to many books/authors.
What I want to know is how do you find new authors in the bookstore?

Depends on how much time I have - covers can definitely draw me in, or do the opposite. I find covers with a hero on it that I find unappealing, I skip right over. Once they put that image in my head I'm stuck with it, and if I don't find the hero attractive I don't want to pick up the book.
Other things that attract me are color or lettering. I like atmospheric pics, sort of like the header on your blog (looks great btw!), that type of thing. But in the end it comes down to the blurb on the back.
I'm big on titles. If the title sounds really cheesy or seems to reveal too much about the book, I won't even pick it up. I like titles that make you wonder what the book is going to be about. After that, I look at the cover, and then I read the back of the book.
I agree on the heroes on the cover, Kelly. Heck, I'll do the same if its a heroine.
lol. Thanks!
Oh, titles can really make a difference, Robyn. I totally agree with that.
Sounds like this will be a wonderful read. Just by reading the excerpt I want the book.
Ok that didn't post want I wanted. lol. Here is what it was suppose to post.
The covers of the books also draw me to pick them up and read the brub on the back. If I like it, it goes in my basket to buy. But I am always looking for the new books coming out on my favorite authors. If I can't find them in the store then I go to Amazon.com or Wal-Mart.com and buy them.
lol. You sound like me, sweetie!
