Question of the Week

Everyone has expectations. As readers, we expect our favorite authors to write a certain way in a certain time period (historical/contemporary/paranormal) and with a certain type character.

What happens when you pick up a book by your favorite author and she/he has done something so out of the ordinary than what they've previously released? Maybe they write a contemporary instead of a historical, a historical instead of a paranormal, or even an inspirational instead of a erotic romance. The book may not resonate with you as his/her previous books,so you have a choice. Do you buy another book of theirs and hope they got back to what they were doing best? Or do you move on to another author?

I'm a huge Lisa Kleypas fan and she has switched over to contemporary. I picked up the book at the library and when I opened it to the first page - it was in first person. So I have one of my favorite historical authors writing contemp and in first person. For a minute I hesitated, then thought 'hey, it's Lisa Kleypas'. I read the book in two days and loved it.

I continue to read the books by that author. I'll read just about anything, so that show that the author is capable of other styles and not just one type of writing. It seems to make me like them even more just because of that.

I've never actually had this happen. I have picked up a book by an author I enjoy only to find that the writing/storytelling isn't what it used to be. Very disappointing. At that point I tend to walk away.

I haven't read any of Lisa's contemporaries, Kelly. I'll have to try one. I don't really care for first person though. :S

Some authors can pull that off, Robyn, and those are the best kinds. I love when I find an author like that. :)

Hey, girl!

I've walked away from a couple of authors before too, and I hate that.
